Advancing IDE through Intentional Development

Alcoa Brazil has created intentional development courses aimed at fostering diversity and advancing career growth among its employees. These courses aim to promote inclusivity and empower underrepresented groups within the organization.

A diverse range of subjects aimed at enhancing employee skills and knowledge is covered by the courses. These include programs such as Advancing Supervisory Excellence (ASE) and a career acceleration program specifically aimed at minority groups. Additionally, Alcoa regularly introduces new development projects tailored to specific audience needs.

Designed with varying timeframes, the courses include both fixed-period and recurring programs. This approach is intended to support continuous learning, allowing employees to engage in development activities at their own pace.

Enrollment in the program is optional and each course track is tailored to each identity group’s specific needs and objective. While the content may vary, all courses are designed with accessibility and inclusivity as the top priority.

Evidence suggest that the intentional development courses have been effective. Six months after completing the development programs, 57 percent of underrepresented employees who participated reported tangible career advancements in 2023. These advancements included salary increases, promotions, or transitions to new roles aligned with their career aspirations.

By using this inclusive approach to employee learning, Alcoa hopes to continue empowering underrepresented groups while fostering a high-performing workplace culture.
